1. What is a CN Identity?

A CommonName Identity is a free service offered to personal users. It is a simplified internet identity - a natural name chosen by you, that can be used to navigate to your personal website and send you emails. No more "http://", "www.", "@" and ".com" necessary!

A simplified web address: Simply type *yourname instead of complicated URL’s to navigate to your website. No more http://, www, .com necessary

Type *John Smith instead of http://www.yourISP.com/~jsmith/index
Sending emails: Type *yourname instead of complicated email addresses and domain names to receive emails. No more @, .com, .net needed

Type *John Smith instead of john_smith@isp.net

Your CN Identity is easier for friends and colleagues to remember and best of all it’s completely FREE! But that's not all. Your CN Identity is also the key to unlocking a suite of advanced navigation and search services (see section 5).

2. What type of words can I register as a CommonName?

You can register your personal name or nickname as a CN Identity. You cannot register a business name as a CN Identity.

See our CN Identity Acceptance Guidelines for our full list of rules in relation to CN Identity selection.

3. Can I register more than one CN Identity?

No, an individual can only register one CN Identity.

4. Why do I have to type "*" before my CN Identity?

Anyone who wishes to navigate to your website or send you an email using your CN Identity must type "*" before your CommonName.

The "*" symbol is used to distinguish CommonName Identity's from CommonName Keywords. This helps to avoid confusion when someone is trying to navigate to personal site rather than business site.

If a user types a CN Identity without the "*" symbol, they will either navigate directly to a business site (if the name has been registered as a business CommonName), or will reach a search results page which provides a link to your CN Identity and Netcard.
