2.10 Style Guidelines

A Search Term can be any word or phrase that is not a website address (e.g. "car rental", "real estate", "loans", etc) as long as it complies with these guidelines.

An advertiser may only select a Search Term if it is directly relevant to its business. For example, an advertiser that is a real estate agent in New York may select the Search Terms "real estate", "real estate New York", "apartments New York", "new homes", etc. However, that advertiser would NOT be able to select "travel", "finance", or "home loans" because these Search Terms are not directly relevant to the business of the real estate agent. Even if the real estate agent claimed to be able to know lending businesses in its area, this would not be enough to make the Search Term "home loans" relevant to the estate agent.

An advertiser may not select a Search Term that refers to the company, brand, product or service name of a competitor.

A Search Term may contain any of the following symbols: @ ? /

We will not accept Search Terms that we believe are offensive. A Search Term is offensive if it contains material that is racist, discriminatory, illegal, incites violence or hate or is grossly offensive in nature.

Adult terms may be chosen as Search Terms provided that they are directly relevant to the website and the advertiser indicates that the site contains adult content when selecting the Search Terms.

We will be the sole judge of whether a Search Term is acceptable under these guidelines.

We reserve the right to add Search Terms to the account of any advertiser if we believe that the Search Terms are relevant and will improve the campaign’s performance.

An Advertisement must link to a live website at all times. If your website is not functioning, you must suspend your Advertisements until your website is live again. As is the case with Search term selection, Advertisements must be directly relevant to your business. An Advertisement should be targeted as much as possible and link to the most relevant URL (web page) on a website. For example, if a real estate agent covers two towns, "Smallville" and "Bigville", then the advertiser should have an Advertisement for "Smallville" and an Advertisement for "Bigville", both of which should be linked to the most relevant web page on the advertiser’s website. To aid with relevance and targeting, the Search Term should appear in the title or text of the Advertisement. Doing this will also increase the number of clicks that you will receive. Advertisements must not be misleading or contain incorrect statements or superlatives. The user should find at the website what he/she would expect to find based on the Advertisement. We will not accept Advertisements or websites linked to Advertisements if we believe they are offensive. An Advertisement or website is offensive if it contains material that is racist, discriminatory, illegal, incites violence or hate or is grossly offensive in nature. The Back button must take the user back to our search results when the users has clicked through to your website. An Advertisement must not be linked to a URL that subsequently redirects to another website. We will be the sole judge of whether an Advertisement or website is acceptable under these guidelines. Advertisements should comply with the following Style Guidelines:
  • Apostrophes - do not use apostrophes when making acronyms or abbreviations plural or instead of numbers in a date;
  • Capitals - words may not be all capital letters unless that is your trademarked or usual company display of that word. The first letter of the first word of a sentence or question must be in capitals;
  • Dashes - place one space before and after a dash. Double dashes are not allowed;
  • Dots (Ellipses) - ellipses should be three dots in a row and should not have any spaces before, between or after them. Only use ellipses a maximum of once in any sentence. Do not use an ellipse in the title;
  • Exclamation and Question Marks - do not use exclamation marks to emphasise a point. Only use one question mark at the end of a question;
  • Slashes - do not use a slash as an alternative to a comma;
  • Symbols - do not use excessive symbols or symbols in place of words. Do not use the symbols "&" or "$" to replace the words "and" or "money".
