DOMAIN NAME CONFUSION DENTS ONLINE REVENUES: Survey reveals Internet users enforce ‘three strikes’ rule when trying to find organizations online
London, UK - August 5, 2003 - Organizations could lose millions of dollars each year because their domain names are confusing or difficult to find. This is the finding of research by CommonName, a provider of keyword navigation and Internet search services.
In a recent poll of 519 Internet surfers, 73% stated they experience being unable to find organizations online. 71% admit to switching to a competitive supplier to purchase goods because the Web site was easier to find. 78% reveal frustration at how difficult complicated Web site addresses are to remember.
In 60% of cases, Internet users give up after trying three times or less to reach their online destination. 93% agree it would be much simpler if surfers could just type a company or person’s name into a Web browser. Other popular ways to remember URLs included search engines (60%) and bookmarks (34%).
The proliferation of online business means many companies do not have ‘.com’ as their primary URL. This causes confusion among consumers, who in many cases automatically assume that a company’s URL is its name plus ‘.com’. 74% of respondents made this assumption.
"Often Internet users won’t spend time trying to find a Web site if they don’t get it the first time, or if they know of an alternative supplier which is easy to locate online. This is bad for business and bad for the consumer’s Internet experience," said Yurong Lin, CEO of CommonName. "With the advent of keyword navigation, where you merely have to type in a company name into the Internet browser, users will be able to reach their online destination at the very first attempt. This will ensure organizations don’t lose out on any potential business."
