10th April 2001- CommonName, a
global Internet company, today announced that it has appointed The World
Intellectual Property Organisation ("WIPO") Arbitration and Mediation
Centre to provide dispute resolution services for CommonName, in accordance with
CommonName's Dispute Resolution Policy.
WIPO is an international organisation dedicated
to promoting the use and protection of works of the human spirit. These works -
intellectual property - are expanding the bounds of science and technology and
enriching the arts world. With headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, WIPO is one
of 16 specialised agencies of the United Nations system of organisations. The
WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Centre provides arbitration and mediation
services for the resolution of international commercial disputes between private
parties, including domain name disputes.
Francis Gurry, Assistant Director General and
Legal Counsel of WIPO, commended CommonName for its vigilance in protecting
intellectual property interests: "In view of their relationship with
trademarks and other intellectual property identifiers, keywords may raise
similar issues as domain names. By adopting a well-thought out procedure to
resolve intellectual property disputes, CommonName shows its commitment to keep
its system free of abusive registrations."
Yurong Lin, founder and CEO of CommonName says:
"The appointment of WIPO will give our users added confidence that in the
event of a dispute regarding a CommonName, that dispute will be resolved
impartially by a well respected body. We consider this as an important mechanism
that will further protect the online brands of our users."
